When was the last time you travelled by train just because it was there? Probably never. Trains to practically everyone conjure up an image of urgency, purpose and simply a mode of transport for getting from A to B. To others they are a vision of standing room only, probably dirty, cramped conditions and always late.
To be fair, that's not the case anymore. Today's modern trains have a lot more to offer and are a world away compared to the horsehair cushioned, dusty compartments that many seem to think train travel still is. And again, the latter is long gone.
But where's the element of what rail travel used to be like disappeared to? Travelling by train was an almost regal experience. The Victorian engineers that built the UK's railway network ploughed through cuttings, threw up embankments, dug tunnels and erected viaducts with a grandeur that has never been repeated. Sometimes they achieved the near impossible... The constructions were works of art in their own right. The big stations were almost cathedral-like in their elegance.
The legacy of this magnificence is a shop window on the whole of Britain. The lofty Settle & Carlisle line. The East Coast Main Line with it's coastal run between Newcastle and Edinburgh. The flat 'billiard table' run from Paddington to Bristol. Brunel at his very best. The run along the sea wall at Dawlish in Devon to name but a few.
Rail-Blue Charters offers you the window to look at this rich tapestry with all the time in the world. Time to sample excellent cuisine. Time to sip a glass of something special. Time to converse. Step aboard, settle back in a spacious, comfortable carriage and watch Britain unfold as the train covers the miles.
